The only problem with cutting the pockets smaller is that they would not be attached to the jacket along the front seam. The front seam anchors them in place. If you do make them smaller, perhaps you can anchor them within the lining. I've just started one for my husband in a very similar olive drab color. I'm glad you mentioned the enormous pockets. I was thinking as I cut the pattern that they were huge.
